Prevention:
  1. Avoid bright-colored outfits. Muted colors will minimize bee stings. Beware of beehives in trees, bushes and mounds.
  2. Avoid fragrances such as perfume and hair gel when hiking.
  3. Long sleeve shirts and pants are advisable.
  4. When encountering a bee swarm, remain calm. Move slowly and avoid sudden movements.

 Symptoms:

  1. Minor reactions to bee stings include redness, swelling, burning sensation, pain or slight itch.
  2. Serious reactions may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty swallowing and breathing, twitching, unconsciousness, fever, drop in blood pressure and coma.

 Treatment:
  1. Remove the sting using a needle.
  2. Wash the wound with soap or iodine.
  3. Apply cold pack to reduce the swelling.
  4. Seek medical attention promptly.
