The southern area of Yushan National Park has Provincial Highway 20 along the mountain wall on the east bank of Laonong River as its only access road. Haiduan Township of Taitung County is to the east, and Nanhua District of Tainan City is to the west. Wukou and Meishan are the east and west end, respectively, of the highway within the vicinity of Yushan National Park. The area has lush forests, high mountains, and valleys, filled with the magnificence of natural landscape and epic cultural and historical heritage for generations to remember and cherish. The Bunun tribe by Meishankou and Meishan Village is the center where food, beverage, recreation, and visitor information are provided to tourists. The place focuses on the development of natural ecology, culture and history education, and is the main supply post for tours.

It is located at 20 K (Zhongzhiguan parking lot) to 25.1 K (Tianchi Chang-Ching Shrine) on Provincial Highway 20 Temporary Access Road 105, and is a memorial to the pioneers that built the Southern Cross-Island Highway. Key attractions include the Chang-Ching Shrine, Tianchi, which reflects the surrounding scenery, and the "Zhongzhiguan Historic Trail", which preserves a section of the old Guanshan Historic Trail.

The area around the Meishan Visitor Center includes the Meishan Walking Trail, Bunun Cultural Exhibition Center, Meishan Squad of the Sixth Brigade of the Seventh Special Police Corps, Meishan Police Station, Meishankou Shopping Street, Meishan Restaurant Camping Area and Meishan Youth Activity Center. Follow the Meishan Auxiliary Road in front of the Meishan Squad Building to Meishan Tribe (Masuhuaz), which used to go through the Masuhuaz Suspension Bridge. Nowadays, the road goes through Meishan Tunnel and Mei Bridge to reach the tribal settlement. The road behind the settlement can lead to the former site of the Meishan Police Post, or the road in front of the settlement can lead to the Meishan Suspension Bridge, with many scenic views along the way.

From the Meishan Visitor Center, go east on the Southern Cross-Island Highway, along the Provincial Highway 20 Temporary Access Road 105 to Liguan, Zhongzhiguan, Tianchi Recreation Area, Kuaigu, Taguanshan Tunnel, Guanshan-Lingshan, Yakou, and then to Hairui in Taitung (Meishankou to Siangyang is currently passable).

Important Notes

  1. The weather can change rapidly in the mountain areas and the temperature can be quite low (great fluctuation of temperature from early morning to noon and night). Please bring rain gear and warm clothes.
  2. Meishan Visitor Center does not provide lodging services. For visitors who need accommodation, please contact Meishan Youth Activity Center nearby, hostels or campsites.
  3. Tianchi pond is an important water source and habitat for wild animals. In order to preserve the natural environment and prevent forest fires, burning and placing of worshipping goods, releasing domesticated animals, and getting water is prohibited.
  4. In order to protect your pets and wild animals, pets are not allowed into the environmental protection area (Zongzhiguan Trail). If you are moving the Southern Cross-Island Highway, please put your pets on a leash. It is still recommended not to bring your pets into the area.
  5. It is prohibited to catch wild animals without permission. Feeding, interfering, coming into contact with, and breeding animals are not allowed in order to avoid attacks by wild animals.
  6. The designated cooking area on the Southern Cross-Island Highway is located at the Zongzhiguan Trail parking lot (350 meters below the trailhead of Zongzhiguan Trail). Please do not cook in other locations that have not been designated.
  7. Do not climb on, harvest, or take the crops grown at Meishan Village (Meishan tribe).
  8. Guanshan and the Three Stars of Southern Cross-Island Highway (Taguan Mountain, Guanshanling Mountain, and Kuhanuoxin Mountain) cooperates with highway control measures and conditions allow for mountaineering activities
  9. The Tianchi Recreational Area does not have trash cans. Please take your trash with you when you leave to preserve the natural environment.
