Map Eastern

The administrative region of the eastern part of Yushan National Park includes Zhuoxi Township of Hualien County, with Yuli Township of Hualien County as the gateway. Provincial Highway 30 (Yuchang Highway) is the main road. Start from the intersection of Provincial Highway 9 and 30in Yuli, travel 14 kilometers toward Zhuoqing Village to reach the eastern section of Shanfeng trailhead of Batongguan Traversing Trail, which is also the well-known Walami Trail.

The trail from Shanfeng to the 13.6 K spot of Walami is adequately maintained and is suitable for light travel and hiking. The section between Dafen and Dashuiku to the west of Walami is not regularly maintained, so visitors should be fully prepared before going.

The trail in the area goes along the Laklak Stream. The winding channel has a narrow upstream, and the downstream forms a broad and magnificent valley landscape. Laklak Stream slows down in the upstream of Taluk Bridge, forming a ring-shaped hilltop landscape between Nan-an and Luming. The large farmland in front of the Nan-an Visitor Center has become a key place for organic rice farming for the local Bunun tribal people. The green rice fields when the rice seedlings grow at the beginning and the yellow fields when rice ears are ready for harvest create a pleasant scenery with the local mountains and waters.

Important Notes

  1. If you see a black bear in the wild, and the bear has not noticed you, please maintain a proper distance and leave quietly. Do not scream or act bizarrely to disturb the black bear.
  2. When walking in the mountains and forests, please pay attention to your surroundings. If the visibility is poor or if you come to some turning points, you can make some noises or wear a bear bell to avoid unexpected encounters with bears.
  3. Near areas where black bears frequent, please travel in groups and follow the pack tightly to maintain a formation in which people can communicate back and forth.
  4. Please do not leave food or trash in mountain cabins or campsites, as it may attract black bears to come for food or inadvertently damage the cabins and facilities in the campsites. Avoid feeding as it may cause black bears to seek out people for more food, further causing more conflicts.
  5. Deinagkistrodon snakes often come to Walami Trail. As they have protective colors on their body, they are not easy to spot on the trail. Please watch your step and find them as early as possible. If you are bitten, please remain calm and keep the bitten spot below the height of your heart, slow down your body movements and ask others for help.
  6. In order to avoid getting lost or accidents in the area, please try to move on the trail only. Do not stray off the trail and run into the forest.
  7. Blood-sucking leeches often hide in damp and still water, and they are even more active in rain, so please be careful.
  8. The trailhead of Walami Trail (Shanfeng #1 Suspension Bridge) to "Mileage: 7 kilometers" is a special landscape area that does not require an entry permit. The area beyond "Mileage: 7 kilometers" is considered an ecological protection area, and an entry permit is required.
  9. Pets are not allowed on the entire route of the Walami Trail.
  10. The period between June and November every year is the breeding period for hornets. They may sting people aggressively if disturbed, please be careful.
  11. Please do not wander around plank roads, cliffs, collapsed ground, and rockfall areas to take photos, especially on rainy days.
