Entry permit is required for Kuhanuoxinshan and Guanshan
Entry permit is not required for Taguan Mountain and Guanshan-Lingshan
The three major mountains of the Southern Cross-Island Highway are Kuhanuoxinshan, Taguan Mountain and Guanshan-Lingshan. Along with Guanshan, all of them are famous mountains with an altitude of more than 3,000 meters near the Highway. Guanshan, which has a unique pyramidal shape, is especially renowned and is the boundary mountain of the southern section of Yushan National Park. The trailheads for all four of these mountains are located along the South Cross-Island Highway (Guanshan and Kuhanuoxinshan are located at Jinjing Bridge, Taguan Mountain is located at about 2.5 km past Kuaigu, and Guanshan-Lingshan at the eastern exit of the Daguan Mountain Tunnel).
Hiking on the three mountains of the Southern Cross-Island Highway and Guanshan can be done from the trailhead, but the trail is mostly steep. Some sections of the trail require rope climbing, so you need to assess your physical condition and ability. If you are hiking Kuhanuoxinshan and Guanshan, you can choose to stay at Kuhanuoxinshan Mountain Hut for 1 or 2 nights to recover more and reduce the risk of climbing accidents. The Kuhanuoxinshan Trail is about 3.5 kilometers long, the Taguan Mountain Trail is about 2.2 kilometers long, the Guanshan-Lingshan Trail is about 1.5 kilometers long, and the Guanshan Trail is about 5.6 kilometers long. When the South Cross-Island Highway is reopened, it will reduce the time and difficulty level of hiking activities.
