It has independent peaks such as the main peak of Mt. Jade, the highest peak in Northeast Asia, and Xiuguluan Mountain; the south peak of Mt. Jade and jagged peaks of Mt. Jade's closed curve peak; Batongguan, Tataka Anbu (Saddle of Tataka), pass of Guangao; Jinmentong Cliff formed by the erosion from Chenyoulan River; Father-and-Son Cliff in Dongpu and Shalixian Creek terrace. The sea of clouds, snow in the mountains in winter, sunrise and sunset, and colorful clouds from time to time, Yunlong Waterfall and Yinu Waterfall add seclusion and beauty to the forest.
This area has both the subtropical and cold zone ecosystems, breeding rich and diverse vegetation in the forest. From places in the lower altitude to places in the higher altitude, visitors can see the broadleaf forest, temperate broadleaf, and mixed forests, spruce forest, hemlock forest, fir forest, shrubs formed by Yushan junipers and Rhododendron and alpine belt and other rich natural resources such as birds, mammals, and butterflies.<br />
The cultural and historical attractions include the Temple of the Mountain God at the west peak, Mt. Jade Weather Station, Central Weather Bureau at the north peak, Batongguan Ancient Trail, Batongguan Traversing Trail and indigenous Bunun tribes in Dongpu.
Tataka Recreation Area
Tataka comes from the language of the Tsou tribe, and it means broad and flat grassland. Tataka, at an elevation of 2,610 meters, is the highest point of New Central Cross-island Highway and also the junction of Chiayi-Yushan Provincial Highway 18 and Shuili-Yushan Provincial Highway 21. Provincial Highway 18 leads to Alishan in Chiayi, and Provincial Highway 21 heads south toward Xinyi of Nantou. Coming out of the highway bends and twists in the more misty area, you will suddenly feel relaxed after reaching Tataka. The highway becomes straight. With the blue sky above, the clouds and mists seen earlier are now tumbling below. The Alishan mountain range to the west looks like sacred with a sea of clouds. The Lulinshan mountain range to the southwest leans against the road. To the east is the majestic Yushan mountain range, and the rolling mountains extend beyond the horizon. Dongpu mountain range to the north is on one side of the highway and is where the attractions are.
There is often a sea of clouds and mountain mists in Tataka in the early morning and evening. At the beginning of winter, Reddening Maples in the nearby mountain areas turn red to dress up the green forest, adding splendor to the landscape. In the early morning around the spring equinox, the red-in-white flowers of Yushan Rhododendrons bloom also dress up the land.
Dongpu Area
Besides Tataka Recreation Area, Dongpu 1st Neighborhood is another entrance to the northwest area of Yushan National Park. Starting from the well-known Dongpu Hot Spring Area, visitors can go across the suspension bridge in Dongpu to reach the 1st Neighborhood of Dongpu Village and enter the vicinity of Yushan National Park. It has cultural and historical heritage such as the Bunun tribe's traditional culture, Batongguan Historical Trail built during the Qing Dynasty, Batongguan Traversing Trail, and others. The place also has a rich diversity of animals, plants, and ecosystems where people can appreciate flowers, birds, waterfalls, stargazing, fireflies, and maple trees. There are also Father-Son Cliff, Chenyoulan River valley, Yunlong Waterfall, and other landscape views.
◎ The trail enters the "Ecological Protection Area" after passed by Yunlong Waterfall. Before entering, visitors must apply for permits at Tataka Visitor Center or Paiyun Mountaineering Center.
