The three-year project aims to construct a model of geomorphological evolution around the Main Peak of Yushan (the Jade Mountain) in order to prepare the geology background information for the tourists visiting the Yushan National Park. The major task in this first year is to conduct geological investigation along the hiking trails leading to the Main Peak, the West Peak and the East Peak. The major results from the first-year project are summarized as follows. 1. This project produced the geological maps and the cross-sections along the hiking trails leading to Main Peak, the West Peak, and the East Peak. The regional geology was divided into 6 rock sections; their sequences were recognized. The major geological structures controlling the processes of geomorphological evolution were also identified. 2. The possible geomorphological evolution and the major factors affecting the evolution in the region around the Main Peak can be supported by the evidences of structural processes which have been noted in the field investigation. In addition to the influence of geological structures, the regional landscape was also likely affected by glacier erosion. 3. Six explanatory boards of geological information along the trails were suggested with their contents and proper locations. One short film taking by Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) was further prepared to exhibit the geomorphological and geological features in the region around the Main Peak.
