Dongpu in Bunun tribe, in Yushan National Park, is located in the eastern side of the Xing Yi Village of Nanto County. People in Dongpu used to make their own livings by hunting, as time goes; the life style has gradually be en transferred into agriculture. However, they cultivated mainly by means of conventional farming, employing pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and weedicides, which are actually against the spirit of conservation of the Yushan National Park. Since 2012, Yushan National Park Management has delegated Tse-Xin Organic Agriculture Foundation for promoting the project named “Organic farming assistance for peripheral tribes in Yushan National Park” aiming to conserve the natural scenery and wildlife, in addition, on benefit for protecting their economic income from damage. The project has been developing for three years. Starting from 2014, we have implemented five directions, including “substantial facilitation on organic farming in correspondence to the objectives of the National Park”, “enhancement of organic farming techniques”, “development on habitat conservation ”, “steady interaction between farmers and consumers”, and “ free medical consultation in tribes”, in pursuance of supporting farmers practically and mentally. Initially, tribal residents were worried about the slumping number of crops attributing organic farming. Over three years, the Management and the Foundation have continuously spared no effort on dealing difficulties with the residents, so four farmers have successfully passed the Organic Certification by reaching 1.8948 hectares, which grows 38% than last year.Aside from tomatoes, cabbages, and cucumbers for last year, green peppers and podded peas, newly added crops for this year, have ideal output in comparison to previous years owing to the maturity of organic farming. From the aspect of ecological conservation, three farmers have applied the Green Conservation Label promoted by the Forestry Bureau in the range of 2.5895 hectares for saving Crested Serpent Eagles and Collared Scops Owl. By four organic farmers’ persistence, they have increasingly found it is doable. Based on the inspection report of medical consultation, tribal residents have become healthier due to avoid adopting conventional farming. When farmers consider for the environment, not only do they feel healthier, but also coexist peacefully with creatures. Furthermore, the accomplishment of Green Conservation Label arouses the farmers’ concern about endangered species. Expectantly, we would like to enlarge the margin of organic farms, in the meantime, to enrich a variety of habitat and assist the organic farming techniques as well, which service the purpose of economy and conservation.
