本計畫之進行主要是以人類學傳統的田野調查方法為本透過一長期而深入的民族誌調查研究以對研究對象的社會和文化體系有基本掌握。本計畫所擬全期民族誌調查研究，共包含個重要領域：（一）族群分布、人口以及聚落之遷移及歷史（二）經濟（三）社會組織（四）政治（五）宗教祭儀。主題性調查則包括5個重要主題：口傳文學、歌謠和音樂、舞蹈、物質文化、建築。本期研究是從76年2月16日進行到12月31日，民族誌調查研究主要是探討布農族的族群分布、人口以及聚落之遷移及歷史。布農族是台灣原住民族中移動幅度最大、伸展力最強的一族，其分布地區之廣，僅次於泰雅族，位居第二。就布農族的族群移動歷史而言，可分為兩大移動期。本期主題性調查研究則是口傳文學。

This research project primary uses the traditional anthropological field survey methodology. The purpose of this project is to have a basic understanding of the social and cultural systems of the research subjects, and uses a long-term and in-depth ethnographical survey. This research project was a long-term ethnographical survey, which included the following areas: 1. ethnic group distribution and population, and settlement migration and history of the Bunun tribe 2. economy 3. social organization 4. politics 5. religion and rituals The topical survey includes five topics: oral literature, folk songs and music, dance, material culture, and architecture. This stage of the project was conducted from February 16, 1987 to December 31 of the same year. The ethnographic survey mainly focuses on ethnic group distribution and population, and settlement migration and history of the Bunun tribe. The Bunun is the most mobile and one of the widest distributions of all Taiwan’s aboriginal tribes; only the Taiya tribe has a wider distribution. The Bunun’s migration history can be broken into two periods. In this year’s study, the focus of the topical survey is oral literature.
