Formosan Sambar Cervus unicolor swinhoei

Feature
This animal has a body length of 170~240cm, tail length at 20~30cm and it is the largest Artiodactyla in Taiwan. The body hair is colored in brown and brighter during summer. There are also spots on its body and the male has horns on the head. The horns start to branch at the age of 2 and reach a maximum of three branches.

Habits

The species originally lived in a forest region at an altitude of 300m; because of habitat damage and hunting pressure, it gradually moved to live in a few regions at medium and high altitudes. The animal is gregarious, but the male prefers to move alone. Moreover, it is diurnal and often eats leaves and shoots at its equivalent height. The animal has a habit of horn grinding.
