Originally, Yushan Cane could grow to a height of several meters. To accommodate the environment through years of strong wind blowing in high mountains, it developed a growing pattern of horizontal spreading and groveling like Single-seed Juniper. Because of such flexible characteristics perhaps, the species was able to occupy habitat in high mountains alone, where other plants could not use. The Yushan Cane distributes at an altitude of 1000-3000m in Central Mountains by growing in shrubs, open lands and primitive forests.
