Gentiana scabrida

On the hiking trails of Yushan National Park, the small bell-like flowers of bright yellow color blooming along both sides are the Yushan Gentian. The species is quite common in grasslands and both sides of trails in high mountains, and it prefers places with much sunlight. The name “Yushan Gentian” implies bitterness and the rhizome is said to be an excellent cure in Chinese herbal medicine for gastrointestinal irritations! Blooming usually occurs during April-September, which is most common over exposed land facing the sun, shrubs of secondary forest or edge of the forest in the Park. There are tiny spots at the throat of the corolla in light or bright yellow color. The flower shows wide bell shape when blooming, as if vibrantly cheering for the hikers.
