Yushan Trailhead (saddle of Tataka) is located at the 2.8 K spot of the Nanxi forest trail. A saddle refers to the relatively gentle area between two mountains. Jade Mountain and Alishan Mountain are located on the east and west sides of the Tataka saddle, respectively. It is also the watershed divide of Shalixian Creek (Jhuoshuei River upstream) and the Nanzixian River (Gaoping River upstream). As the air currents from the two valleys go up, it serves as a migration corridor for butterflies and birds. This is the entrance for climbing Yushan.

The area beyond the main peak line is an ecological protection area where applications for entry permits in advance are required. The place is also accessible to Lizhi Mountain. Travel toward the Nanxi forest trail and walk down for 8 kilometers to reach Nanxi Conservation Research Station.

It only accepts applications for research and environmental education purposes. The road has frequent landslides due to geological fragmentation. Visitors must stay alert at all times.
