This project aimed to understand the implementation of traditional ceremonies and their wildlife utilization in the indigenous communities nearby the Yushan National Park, as a response to the local request in the protection and practicing traditional culture. According to the present regulation of the Article 21-1 of the Wildlife Conservation Act, the Bunun Tribe in the Sinyi Township has practice 8 ceromonial evens throghtout the whole year traditionally, however, they had not following the traditions for several decades. Based on the records provided by the Nantou County Government, Sinyi Township applied their hunting permits only at the end of the year for 2016 and 2017, and at the beginning of the year for 2018. A total of 25 ceremonial hunting permit applications were submitted during this period and they were all for the activity intitle of “Back to the Place of Origin,” which is not one of the 8 ceremonial evens listed in the regulation. The total number of larger mammals required for the even every year was estimated around 200 individuals. It was suggested that the Yishan National Park should initiate the population monitoring project for larger mammals, as well as actively establish a closer partnership in hunting management with the cirounding trible communities.
