This project was initiated in response to the increasing number of Formosan black bear (Ursus thibetanus formosanus) incidents in Yushan National Park and the growing risk of human–bear interactions in the eastern park area and surrounding regions. The objectives were to strengthen wildlife rescue and emergency response capacity, promote human–bear coexistence, and establish an interagency collaboration mechanism for wildlife conservation.
The project focused on four major components: conducting Formosan black bear rescue training through simulated exercises; organizing eight public outreach lectures to enhance understanding of bear ecology and human–bear coexistence; developing indoor and outdoor educational programs with accompanying instructor training; and revising the black bear rescue and emergency response mechanism by integrating reporting procedures, rescue operations, and cross-agency coordination. Conservation outreach materials were also produced to increase public awareness.
The project completed four rescue training sessions, eight public lectures, the development of one indoor curriculum and one outdoor puzzle-based educational program, two instructor training workshops, revisions to rescue procedures, and three conservation outreach articles. The results demonstrated improved rescue preparedness and operational confidence among participants, strong public engagement in outreach activities, positive feedback on the educational programs, and enhanced coordination in emergency response. Overall, the project strengthened conservation capacity among management agencies and local communities while increasing public support for Formosan black bear conservation, contributing to the long-term goal of fostering human–bear coexistence.
