 | SWINHOF'S LOPHURA |
Swinhoe’s pheasant is a large chicken-like bird. The female is reddish brown with tan-colored arrows scattered throughout its body; the arrowheads are broader and more intricately patterned on the chest while more condensed and bright on the wings. The bare skin on her face is red. Her outer tail feathers are chestnut. She can be most easily distinguished from female Mikado pheasants (also found in the park) by her red legs.
The glorious male Swinhoe’s pheasant is clothed in navy blue. The edge of each blue feather glistens in metallic hues under proper light. His crown, upper back, and the two central tail feathers are pure white, with maroon shoulders, while the edges of his wing coverts reflect a greenish blue. The red flesh of his face can expand into long erect horns and extended lobes during courtship. His legs are also red.
Swinhoe’s pheasants are taller and slightly larger than Mikado pheasants. The male is about 72 cm from head to tail, while the female is about 55 cm.
